Whole Body Cryotherapy

What is it?

Whole Body Cryotherapy is the exposure of the body to ultra-low temperatures (-200 to -255 F) for 2-3 minutes in order to induce a metabolic and circulatory boost. Studies conducted over the last two decades have established it as a powerful modality for inflammation reduction and injuries.  Professional athletes have utilized it as a powerful treatment to decrease recovery time and increase athletic performance.

  • Improves athletic and exercise recovery

Is Whole Body Cryotherapy new?

No, Whole Body Cryotherapy cryosaunas were introduced in Japan in the early 1970’s and has been used extensively worldwide.  It has been used in the U.S. for years in the form of ice baths, but recent improvements in the technology have lead to the current cryosaunas, introduced in 2010, which are able to deliver a superior product in less time and with fewer risks.

How does it work?

Whole Body Cryotherapy stimulates the sympathetic nervous system via specialized receptors in the skin, causing dramatic peripheral vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels).  This induces a series of adaptive changes resulting in pain relief, reduction of inflammation, and improved tissue repair.

Are there any dangers?

Whole Body Cryotherapy is an extremely safe treatment when proper safety procedures are observed.  If a client steps into the cryosauna with wet clothing or skin, the water can freeze and cause frostbite, so it is important to assure all skin and clothing is fully dry.  In order to protect the more temperature sensitive tissues such as hands and feet, clients wear dry wool socks, slippers, and gloves, which we provide. The nitrogen being used to cool the cryosauna is the same nitrogen that makes up the air we breathe (actually 78% of it).  In a single person cryosauna, the operator raises the platform the client stands on up so that the head is above the level of the chamber and the client breathes room air.

Who should avoid using cryotherapy?

Just like any other treatment modality, safety is of utmost importance and not everyone should use cryotherapy.  Contraindications include:

  • Heart Disease or previous heart attack
  • Unstable angina or chest pain
  • Cardiac pacemaker
  • Heart rhythm disorders
  • Extreme (>160/100) or uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Recent cerebrovascular accident (stroke)
  • Cancer
  • Bacterial and viral skin infections
  • Seizures
  • Cold-allergy
  • Acute kidney and urinary tract diseases
  • Blood clot history
  • Peripheral arterial disease
  • Raynaud’s syndrome
  • Neuropathy
  • Pregnancy

How do I prepare for a session?

There is no special preparation required for your session.  Private changing space is provided as well as all necessary protective clothing.

Will I feel different immediately?

During each session the body releases endorphins, which are hormones that make you feel good and energetic. The mood-enhancing effects from each session can last for hours or days.

How often should I use whole body cryotherapy?

Depending on the condition of treatment, you should initially take 5 – 10 treatments in close succession (separated by 1-2 days — e.g. 3x/week) to maximize your results for the first 4-6 weeks. Maintenance at 1-2x/week is typically of long-term benefit.  Exceeding 3-4 sessions/week can decrease potential benefits due to adaptation.
